About Me

Pallavi Misra standing in front of IIT Delhi

Hi, I'm Pallavi Misra.

On paper, my academic journey might seem fairly conventional. I did well in school, completed my undergrad at IIT Delhi, and later pursued my master's at Georgia Tech in the U.S.

What that summary doesn't reveal is how much of the journey was shaped by curiosity, independent decision-making, and figuring things out along the way.

Like many students, I didn't start with a perfectly defined plan. I missed deadlines. I learned through trial and error. I sought guidance from seniors, mentors, friends, and professors whenever I could.

While my family gave me the invaluable gift of education, many of the key decisions - what to study, where to go, and how to navigate unfamiliar systems - were largely my own.

Looking back, the milestones may appear linear, but the growth behind them was deeply self-driven.

Today, I work as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in the United States. On a more personal note, I live in Florida with my husband, who also happens to be my undergrad sweetheart.

I mentor students because I understand how confusing and overwhelming this journey can feel without clarity and how transformative the right guidance can be.

Foreign Research Internships

When I first began exploring foreign research internships, I had very little idea where to start. There was no obvious playbook, no simple guide on finding opportunities, reaching out to professors, shortlisting institutes, or even understanding which programs existed. Like many students, I navigated the process through experimentation, persistence, and countless conversations with seniors and mentors.

These international internship experiences turned out to be deeply transformative, not only academically but also personally. They exposed me to new research environments, different cultures, and ways of thinking that are difficult to experience otherwise.

During my second year, I had unknowingly missed most structured internship deadlines simply because I wasn't even aware they existed. That is when I decided to take a different approach. I turned to cold emailing researchers - a strategy I had barely understood at the time.

Fortunately, it worked.

Through this process, I secured a fully funded summer research internship at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, Germany.

My project focused on population genetics, which, in simple terms, explores how genes change and evolve across generations. I worked with biological datasets and computational models to study how genetic variations spread within populations.

By my third year, I had developed a much clearer understanding of the foreign internship landscape and started applying early to structured international programs.

Through the Mitacs Globalink internship program, I secured a fully funded summer research scholar position at McGill University.

My research focused on epigenetics and mental health. In simple terms, epigenetics explores how life experiences and environmental factors can influence gene activity without changing the underlying DNA. The project examined how such biological mechanisms may be connected to mental health outcomes.

If you're a student wondering where to start, how to reach out, or whether you're “good enough” to apply, you're not alone. I've been in that position myself, and I understand how confusing the process can feel.

Master's Abroad

Applying for a master's program abroad can feel overwhelming at first. Between entrance exams, university research, application deadlines, and financial planning, the process quickly becomes more complex than most students expect.

One of the most valuable lessons from my own journey was realizing that preparation and timing matter just as much as academic credentials.

A strong application requires more than good grades and test scores. It involves thoughtful program selection, early exam preparation, clear recommendation strategies, and realistic financial planning.

During my application cycle, I received admits from 7 out of the 8 universities I applied to, including the University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich, EPFL, Johns Hopkins University, University of British Columbia, UCLA, and Georgia Tech.

While the outcomes may sound smooth in hindsight, the journey certainly wasn't. I made mistakes. I felt overwhelmed. My final semesters of undergrad were especially challenging because I was simultaneously completing one degree while preparing to begin another.

In 2019, I began my master's at Georgia Tech - starting a new academic chapter.

One of the most frequent questions students ask me is about funding. In my case, both my tuition and living expenses were fully covered. I had arranged a backup student loan as a precaution but ultimately did not need it.

Contrary to common assumptions, this was not the result of a single prestigious scholarship. There are often multiple pathways to making graduate education financially feasible - many of which students simply aren't aware of.

Over time, I realized that much of the stress students experience comes not from a lack of capability, but from a lack of structured guidance. When you understand the moving pieces early, the process becomes significantly more manageable and far less intimidating.

If you are navigating master's applications and would like structured guidance on timelines, exam preparation, shortlisting programs, funding strategies, or application planning, you are welcome to book a complimentary 30-minutes session.
